The Flossmoor Sculpture Gardens public arts program is the first of its kind in Chicagoland. Mayor Roger Molski launched the project in 1998, drawing inspiration from a trip to Paris, France. You will find 12 large sculptures along the charming village streets, with several clustered in Flossmoor Garden and Sculpture Park at Leavitt and Park avenues. Esteemed Chicago landscape architect Peter Lindsay Schaudt sculpted the grounds. In addition to the roster of permanent sculptures crafted by distinguished national artists, new works rotate onto the village streets each year.
Interesting Facts About Flossmoor
Chicagoans have been traveling out to Flossmoor in south suburban Cook County since the 1890s when the Illinois Central Railroad developed a small village on 160 acres along its rail line. A contest yielded the name “Floss Moor” for the rolling land’s resemblance to the Scottish countryside. After the Flossmoor Country Club was founded as one of the first golf clubs in the Midwest in 1899 members began lobbying the railroad to build a train station for the community. When the English Tudor style depot was erected wealthy Chicago businessmen began building vacation homes in Flossmoor. Enough people began living in the village full time that it was incorporated in 1924. That train station, by the way, stands today and operates as a popular brewery and restaurant, one of the alluring draws of this affluent Chicago suburb for visitors.
