Interesting Spots to Visit in the Suburb of DeKalb
DeKalb is a university town, home to Illinois’ second largest university. Northern Illinois University students contribute a youthful feel to this city of around 45,000 people. Some NIU architecture, however, betrays heritage going back further than the start of any modern four-year degree program.
Exquisite Altgeld Hall resembles a castle more than a university building. It was built in the 1890s and was home to the library, but now houses the mathematics program. Whether or not you plan to step inside the academic institution, viewing the building from outside is worth a walk or a drive. Notice the imposing fortress style, with tall crenellated towers reminiscent of centuries-old European defensive structures.
A more modern style of architecture awaits visitors to Ellwood House Museum. It was built during roughly the same era and has undergone multiple renovations. Explore the past and present of Ellwood House, its grounds, and the history of barbed wire. DeKalb is the birthplace of barbed wire, developed as a cheap fencing alternative for DeKalb farmers. The house also contains a collection of sheet music worth perusing.
Another house on the property, this time in mock-Tudor style, has recently been donated to the museum society. It will soon be open as a place for visitors to learn more about early family life in DeKalb.
